Korea, Adoption of the International Standard in Applications of Patents and Trademarks

The Korean Industrial Property Office (KIPO) recently submitted an application of admission for the IPC treaty regarding the international patent classification and the NICE treaty concerning the international classification of the goods and services for trademark registration to the WIPO, and thus Korea has adopted the International Standard for patent and trademark applications.
For this reason, the KIPO expects that the utility and the exchange of the international information related to patents and trademarks will be promoted.
The KIPO anticipates that adoption of the international standard in the patent and trademark classifications will enable Korea to enter into various international treaties and the commercial troubles in the intellectual property rights related to the system of trademark will be overcome.

Patent Information Furnishing Service of KIPRIS available Through the Internet

The Patent Technology Information Center started to give access "the KIPRIS Patent Information Furnishing Service" to the general public via the internet (http://www.kipris.or.kr) charge included from November 1998, which will enable the general public to search easily for information regarding industrial property rights through the internet.
This service was changed to the web type, thus the connection was carried out easily.
The precision and the quickness of data and the stability in the search were improved greatly.
The Patent Technology Information Center intends to exempt entrance fees and to discount the user fees for venture businesses, small and medium enterprises with the industrial property department and student subscribers.

The On-line Application system is about to open in Korea.

The on-line application system will be started next January.
According to the system, the overall patent administration, such as, the application, the examination, the registration and the publication of the official gazette regarding the industrial property right will be executed through the network.
Pursuant to the KIPONET System developed by the KIPO and LG-EDS System, the overall administration related to the patent would be able to be processed through the network, such as, the exclusive network, the internet or the ISDN.
The user will be able to file the application of the patent to the KIPO via the network and also the examination result by the examiner can be informed to the user through the network.
This system applies utterly the SGML (Standard Generalized Markup Language) suggested by the WIPO and manages the application documents with units of paragraph, so that it is possible to examine on the basis of the electronic documents regarding all the applications of the industrial property right which will have been filed from next January.

The Examination Standards for the Technology Related to the Information Apparatus to be instituted

From January, the application regarding technology related to the information apparatus will be examined under the examination standards of the information apparatus field which will be enacted specially.
