KIPO Has Been Distributing a Program For Drawing up the Sequence Listing.

KIPO has enforced a "System for presentation of the nucleotide and amino acid sequence listing and the electronic file thereof" since January 1999 and has been distributing the handbook thereof. If any user intends to file a patent application related to genes, the user has to draw up a sequence listing with "KOPatentIn", that is, the program for drawing up the sequence listing" exhorted by the KIPO and attach it to the electronic document of the patent application, then the user may file it with the KIPO on-line.
This program is written on CD-ROM which is distributed by the KIPO only if any user files an application for usage of the electronic documents to the KIPO and can also be downloaded through the homepage (kipo.go.kr) of the KIPO through the internet. This program "KOPatentIn" had been developed in partnership with the KIPO and Life Science Research Institute and conforms with the international standard.
Furthermore, with this program, the electronic file is easily read by computer and is able to be easily drawn up.
In accordance with this system, it is possible to obtain the electronic document handled by the computer in regard to the gene sequence.

The KIPO Has Kept a Strict Control on Counterfeit Goods

The KIPO announced the result of the last year's crackdown on counterfeit goods which had been performed jointly by the KIPO, the prosecutors and the police.
In the crackdown on counterfeit goods stores, the counterfeit goods with famous trademarks, such as CHANEL, NIKE, BURBERRYS, LOUIS VUITTON and TOMMY HILFIGER were exposed and these famous trademarks made up 50.5% of those prosecuted, while in the result of the crackdown on counterfeit goods manufacturing businesses, the famous trademarks of the counterfeit goods, for example, BASKIN ROBBINS, RENOMA, TOMMY GIRL, BURBERRYS and ADIDAS made up 46.7% of those prosecuted. Furthermore, in the law for the prevention of the unfair competition and the law related to trade secrets which has been enforced from January 1999, for those who refuse or avoid the crackdown in the crackdown of the counterfeit goods, a fine less than £Ü20,000,000 will be imposed.
For this reason, it is expected that the crackdown of the KIPO will be effective.

The Acquirement of U.S. Patents by Korean Enterprises Has Increased Rapidly.

In U.S.A., Korean enterprises have been increasing the acquirement of patents and the application for the patents with the intention of promoting exports and protecting technology, Korean enterprises have experienced a rapid increase in the acquirement of U.S. Patents last year.
Recently, the Information For Industry (IFI) which is the U.S. investigation organization related to patents announced the following.
Samsung electronics and Daewoo electronics entered the top 50 enterprises of U.S. Patents.
In respect to the U.S. patent registration, Samsung electronics obtained 1306 registrations of U.S. patents and held 6th rank last year, while Daewoo electronics obtained 320 registrations of U.S. patents and held 41st rank and LG semiconductor obtained 235 registrations and reached the 55th rank.

The Trademark Application Regarding the Domain Name Has Suddenly Increased.

Recently, in the environment which the trademark value of the internet address (it is called the domain name) has greatly increased over the whole world, and also in Korea, the trademark application regarding the domain name has been increasing.
