More than half of the¡¸.com¡¹trademark applications were refused.

Recently, the trademark applications of¡¸.com¡¹of internet domain are increasing rapidly.
However, more than half of these trademark applications were found to be refused.
KIPO said that the number of trademark applications having the word ¡¸.com¡¹was 570 cases from the beginning of this year to July.
This represents an increase of 2 times or more compared to only 230 cases last year.
This trend shows that the enterprises are filing¡¸.com¡¹trademark applications competitively to preoccupy domains which are easy to remember for marketing using domain name as internet and electronic commerce become generalized.
The latest tendency of¡¸.com¡¹trademark applications are changing from trademark combining¡¸.com¡¹with the existing trademark to peculiar trademark such as¡¸DontWorry.com¡¹,¡¸Alibaba.com¡¹or the like.
Among 140¡¸.com¡¹trademark applications which KIPO examined last year, only 64 trademarks were registered while the other 76 trademarks were refused.
Considering trademarks refused to be registered, very simple and common trademarks such as i.com or e.com were 29 cases representing 38.2%, similar trademarks were 24 cases representing 31.6%, trademarks including a wrong writing of goods or service were 23 cases representing 30.2%.
KIPO said that¡¸.com¡¹was being used as a term representing internet domain so that an exclusive right could not be permitted to¡¸.com¡¹.
Also, KIPO added that discriminating terms except¡¸.com¡¹must be included in trademark.

A network was built between the Korean Industrial Property Office and the Korean Patent Court.

It is expected that a network between KIPO and KPC has been completed so that it will be useful for their mutual business interests.
KIPO announced that the development of a system which started in April has been finished recently and this system is expected to solve the security problems such as illegal approach to closed-door patent materials Accordingly, KPC can search 45 million domestic and foreign patent materials which KIPO holds in its database through on-line system and utilize them in trials.
KIPO and KPC plan to connect an electronic application system of KIPO, ¡¸patent network¡¹and¡¸on-line trial demand system¡¹which is due to be opened in January of 2002 to¡¸cyber KPC¡¹which KPC are pushing ahead with so that everything from examination and trial of KIPO to decision of KPC are executed on-line.

KIPO started an image interview service.

KIPO announced that they decided to execute an image interview system through which civil appealers can have an interview with examiners without visiting KIPO directly.
For this, KIPO built a bi-direction multimedia network center in the Daejeun Office.
KIPO plans to start the service first between the Seoul Office and the Daejeun Office, and then to extend the service by establishing an image interview system in 15 local patent information centers.
Accordingly, civil appealers can exchange views with examiners through an image interview system in the multimedia center without visiting the Daejeun Office directly to meet examiners
