Domestic material patent applications are reducing.It appears that domestic applications are reducing in the field of material patents to be able to produce a vast value added.
According to the Korean Industrial Property Office, the number of material patent applications was 2,000 cases last year, but that of domestic applications was only 464 cases representing 23% of the total applications.
Domestic applications had increased every year until 1997, reaching an increase of a maximum of 30.2%.
However, after that, it has decreased.
This decrease trend shows that the activation of research development was reduced in the field of precision chemistry, polymer and microorganism after monetary crisis.
Through analysis the patent applications of small-to-medium sized enterprises and venture enterprises were increasing, but technical power was relatively weak.
Samsung electronic corporation expects loyalty.Samsung electronic corporation announced that they obtained a patent for 「apparatus and method for coding and decoding video data」related to MPEG technology, and expected a huge loyalty income from advanced countries such as the U.S.A, Europe, Japan and the like.
They obtained this patent from MPEG LA which manages patents related to MPEG.
The MPEG LA collects patent fee from electronic corporations using MPEG technology all over the world and distributes it to corporations holding a patent.
At present, 16 corporations such as Philips, Sony, Mitsbishi etc.
are registered as members.
The number of patent related to MPEG of Samsug electronic corporation is 3 cases in total, among which 2 cases obtained in 1997 were registered only in the U.S.A. and Europe.
Particularly, the other obtained this year was registered also in Japan.
Samsung electronic corporation expects an income of 15 billion won in 2001 and 1,00 billion for a year from 2003 due to the patent acquired this year.
According to this, they expect the loyalty of one trillion won in total for ten years.
Patent applications related to automobile become active.Patent applications related to automobile technology which has been inactive due to the reorganization of automobile industry become active with new technology development.
According to the KIPO's reports, the number of patent and utility model applications was 6495 in 1998 and 7607 last year representing an increase of 17% in the field of domestic automobile technology.
This phenomenon is a contrast to 1997 and 1998 when there was a rapid reduction due to influence of the financial crisis called "IMF crisis".
This is interpreted that even if an economic action was decreased due to the reorganization of the automobile industry, new technology development performed continuously.
Specifically, applications of high-class technology to produce a high value added are increasing such as automatic pursuit system, radio information communication system, GPS system or the like.
Applications of the same or similar trademark are reducing rapidly.Applications of trademarks similar to that registered beforehand by others were reduced rapidly for the last two years, which shows that creative and various types of trademarks are developed.
According to the KIPO's report, the rate of trademarks refused by an existence of same or similar trademarks averaged 60% in 1998; 21.6% last year; 25.5% in the first half of this year.
