Electronic exchange of priority documents between KIPO and JPO

A large volume of chemical base sequence list in priority documents are electronically transferred by CD-ROM not by postal system of paper form between Korean Intellectual Property Office and Japanese Patent Office, which will reduce the cost and improve business efficiency.
Such improvement of transferring internationally electronic documentation caused by KIPO can expedite the practical performance of electronic government internationally for the first time.
Up to now, applicants had to submit the related paper documents to JPO directly after they received the priority documents from KIPO, but from now on they can submit such documents through electronic means, so KIPO and JPO can reduce the expenses to scan documents and the documents can be verified by the on-line system in Patent-net system to increase the efficiency of examinations and trials.
Such electronic documentation transformation of Patent-net system of KIPO can be used to exchange documentations between WIPO, USPTO and EPO and contribute to increase the convenience of applicants in foreign applications.

The change of PCT International application fee

The fee and payment system of international applications under the PCT(Patent Cooperation Treaty) were changed from April 1.
The basic fee of PCT international application is £Ü500,000 (US$385.00) for 30 sheets of paper, and an additional fee is £Ü12,000 (US$9.00) per one more sheet exceeding 30 sheets.
This fee must be paid within one month from international filing date.
The designated fee is £Ü108,000 (US$83.00) per one designated country (if designated countries exceed six, the designated fee for the excess countries should not be paid).
A payment period of designated fee is within one year from priority date and if the one month from the international filing date is later than the one year from the priority date, the designated fee must be paid within one month from the international filing date.
If the Austrian Patent Office is designated as an international search organization, the search fee is £Ü188,000 (US$144.00) and the search fee will be £Ü555,000 (US$426.00) in the case of designation of the Australian Patent Office as an international search organization.

In the digitalized era, the application of image trademarks is increasing.

Recently, the trademark applications of colored and solid trademarks than the existing those consisted of simple character and figure are increasing rapidly.
Last year the number of applications of colored trademarks were 11,250 cases, that of solid trademark were 96 cases, and color and solid combined trademark were 261 cases.
Among this, colored trademark applications increased 16.9% compared to those of 1999 year and color and solid combined trademark also increased 87.8%.
Referring to the classification, the number of applications of colored trademarks in the service class was 4,683, the machinery goods were 1,425, and the cookie goods were 1,298.
The number of applications of solid trademarks in the service class were 19, the cookie goods were 16 and machinery goods were 15.
The number of application of color and solid combined trademarks in service were 135, the cookie goods were 40, and the machinery goods were 32.
Such tendency to file colored and solid trademarks adopted to the new generation is expected to be increased rapidly these days.
