A way around court devised by SoribadaSoribada, a Korean peer-to-peer Internet site that allows users to exchange digital music files, reopened Saturday after it was closed down for more than a month. The company introduced an experimental software called "Soribada 2.0" a SuperPeer strategy which allows members to exchange music files without passing through its main server, the P2P service. The new service is a response to the court ruling last month that found the MP3 file sharing service is an infringement of copyright law. "Soribada is barred from using its three servers for purposes similar to the current service," the court said. Millions of visitors logged onto the Soribada site, causing operating problems Sunday afternoon.
Anycall' and 'Choco Pie' Become Chinese FavoritesTen years after establishing diplomatic ties with China, most Chinese regard Korea as the providers of the Samsung "Anycall" cellular phone, and the Dongyang confectionary "Choco Pie. " Currently there are 180 million mobile phone subscribers and Samsung is number four in overall sales behind Motorola, Nokia and Siemens, but in the high-end bracket it has a 25% share. Its latest Anycall model, the T108, is the most expensive of any cell phone in China at approximately W810,000 (5,800 yuan). Samsung entered the market in 1999 with its 600C model a smaller phone with a voice dial function and sold for 2,000 yuan, higher than its Motoroal and Nokia competitors. Yoo Keun-ik, the companies marketing manager in China said most young Chinese want to own an Anycall phone. Choco Pie was launched on the Chinese market in 1993, one year after the normalization of relations, and Dongyang now sells 100 million a year. The company changed its packaging to appeal to the people there, and now its is a customary gift in family meetings, with sales doubling every year, giving it a 15% share in the confectionary market.
33,000 New Genes DiscoveredThe state-run Center for Functional Analysis of the Human Genome announced Tuesday it has discovered some 33,000 new genes. It said of the newly-isolated genes taken from the DNA extracts of normal and cancer-stricken stomachs and livers, some 10,000 genes came in full-length and had a perfect genetic composition, capable of producing functional proteins. Researchers explained this means that the genes can also be used to make DNA chips. They added the genes will be made public and offered to local scientists free of charge, after their findings are registered with the National Center for Biotechnology Information in the United States
